International Keynote Speaker

Dr Julia Downing

Dr Downing is the Deputy Executive Director of the African Palliative Care Association and is an experienced palliative care nurse and educationalist, with a PhD that evaluated palliative care training in rural Uganda, and a Masters of Medical Science in Clinical Oncology.  She has been working within palliative care for 18 years, with the last nine being in Uganda where she was the Director of the Mildmay International Study Centre before joining the African Palliative Care Association.  Prior to working in Uganda, Dr Downing worked in London as a Lecturer in Cancer Care at the Centre for Cancer and Palliative Care Studies in London and previous to that in the oncology department at Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals.

She has extensive experience in presenting at conferences and writing for publication, and is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Palliative Nursing (IJPN) and is co-editor of the PCAU Journal of Palliative Care

Dr Downing is a member of the Palliative Care Country Team in Uganda, serves on the Boards of several international NGOs in Africa, is the Vice-President of the Palliative Care Association of Uganda, and is on the steering committee of the International Children’s Palliative Care Network.

Prof Alison Kitson RN, BSc (Hons), DPhil, FRCN

Director of CEPSA Professor and Head of Discipline of Nursing, University of Adelaide Fellow, American Academy of Nursing Associate Fellow, Green Templeton College, University of Oxford

Alison Kitson took up the post of Professor of Nursing and Head of Discipline at the University of Adelaide at the beginning of 2009. She became Director of CEPSA in February 2009. She was the Royal Adelaide Hospital Nursing Education Fund Inaugural Fellow and has worked closely with interdisciplinary teams around improving the fundamentals of care for older people going through the acute hospital setting.

Alison has a long career in nursing and her research interests include getting evidence and innovations into everyday practice. Effective leadership is a key part of this.

Sandee BanksSandee Banks

Sandee has been associated with the WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network since 2007 working with individuals and providing workshops on request to address specific needs.

Sandee has a rich corporate background, deep coach-specific training and strong business qualifications and draws on each of these elements in her work.  A former corporate executive, she is also one of only a small number of Coaches in Australia to be awarded a PCC designation by the International Coach Federation.

As an experienced executive coach with a track-record of success across a range of organisations and industries, Sandee has been selected onto a series of coaching panels, including one for an iconic institution through which she coaches international clients.

Keith CoxKeith Cox

Keith is currently the Chemotherapy/ Oncology Nurse Practitioner at the Sydney Cancer Centre based at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney Australia.  He was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2007 Queen’s Birthday honours list for his Services to Cancer nursing, his work with youth and his volunteer work. He obtained Authorisation as a Nurse Practitioner in December 2006, before this he was the Chemotherapy/Oncology Nurse Consultant.

Keith has over 30 years experience in Cancer Nursing; having obtained his Qualification in Cancer nursing from The Royal Marsden Hospital in the UK.

He is a senior Lecturer at Sydney University, and a clinical lecturer in nursing at the University of Tasmania.
 Keith has conducted Oncology Courses both in PNG, Nepal and has been the a Facilitator of oncology programs for Japanese Nurses, an overseas nursing student from Denmark He is past Chair of the Winter Congress committee of Cancer Nurses Society Australia; He is a member of Cancer institute NSW Education and Workforce advisory committee.

Keith has had a wide range of research experience and numerous Publications.

Derek EngDr Derek Eng

Dr Derek Eng, MBBS FRACGP FAchPM, graduated from UWA and obtained Fellowship with Royal Australian College of GP's.  He returned to Advanced Training in Palliative Medicine through the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Chapter of Palliative Medicine in 2003.  Since then, Dr. Eng has been consulting in Palliative Medicine in Royal Perth Hospital, St. John of God Hosp, Subiaco, Hollywood Private Hospital, and Silver Chain Hospice Care Service.  He is also involved in clinical research and education with Curtin University and UWA.    

 

Will HallahanWill Hallahan

Will Hallahan is the Executive Officer of Palliative Care WA Inc, the representative community organisation which seeks quality care and support for all Western Australians at the end of life.  Will has had this position for two and a half years, before this he was the Executive Officer of the Palliative Care Council of SA Inc and the Acting Executive Director of Palliative Care Australia in Canberra.  He has a keen interest in 'health promoting palliative care', and received a Churchill Fellowship in 2007 to study end of life care coalitions in Canada and the USA.

 

Ian HammondProf Ian Hammond

Ian Hammond studied Medicine in London graduating in 1972.  He is a Gynaecological Oncologist and is in active clinical practice in gynaecologic oncology, complex pelvic surgery and colposcopy.

In 2008 and 2009 he was the Director of the Western Australian State Cancer and Palliative Care Network.  He is a Clinical Professor in the School of Women’s & Infants’ Health and in the School of Anatomy and Human Biology at the University of Western Australia.

He is a past Chairman of the Australian Society of Gynaecologic Oncologists, a Member of the International Gynaecological Cancer Society and the Australian Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. He chaired the Group responsible for the NHMRC endorsed Australian guidelines for the management of screen detected Pap smear abnormalities. He is a member of the Advisory Board to the National Centre for Gynaecological Cancers, under the auspices of Cancer Australia.

He is particularly interested in the postgraduate training and education of specialists in O&G and subspecialists in gynaecologic oncology.  He developed the Anatomy of Complications Workshop that is now in it’s 10th year and has held 67 workshops for over 800 participants in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand.

Jo KeyserJo Keyser

Jo Keyser is a Rural Cancer Nurse Coordinator working in the Midwest region of Western Australia. Her role is a joint appointment between the WA Country Health Service and the WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network.

Jo has been nursing for 22 years and has qualifications in Health Education and Health Promotion, and Specialist Breast Care and Prostate Care Nursing. She began her Cancer Nursing career in 2002 as part of The Cancer Council of WA’s Rural Specialist Breast Nurse project, establishing a Specialist Breast Nurse position in the Midwest region before establishing her current role as Rural Cancer Nurse Coordinator.

Jo is a member of the NBOCC Clinical Update Editorial Committee and has an active interest in cancer nursing research. She is currently involved with the WACPCN Cancer Nurse Coordinator Evaluation Project and is an Associate Investigator for the ‘Rural Cancer Patients – Development of Decision Aids for Adults with Lung, Colorectal and Prostate Cancer’ study.

She is committed to empowering the cancer nursing workforce and building capacity in individuals in remote areas to care for cancer patients. Jo has presented at national cancer nursing conferences and participated in meetings and workshops aimed at enhancing cancer care and strengthening cancer nursing positions across Australia. In recognition of her expertise and commitment to cancer nursing in rural WA, Jo was named Rural Registered Nurse of the Year in 2009 by the WA Nurses and Midwives Board.

Mei KrishnasamyDr Mei Krishnasamy

Mei is a cancer nurse with specific interest in the management of complex disease related symptoms, treatment-related toxicities and symptom clusters. She currently works as Nurse Director, Clinical Practice at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac), Melbourne. Her research interests include improving supportive care outcomes and care coordination for people receiving cancer treatment, with particular reference to under-research groups of patients diagnosed with lung and head and neck cancer. She leads the development of nurse-led services at Peter Mac

Mei is Chair of the Cancer Nurses Society of Australia and Co-Editor of the Australian Journal of Cancer Nursing.

David StanleyDr David Stanley

David began his nurse education in Whyalla, South Australia in 1980 and has worked as a nurse and midwife in Australia, the Pacific, Africa and the UK. He furthered his nursing education while working as a Nurse Practitioner and senior lecturer in the UK, with a Masters in Health Sciences from Birmingham University and a Nursing Doctorate from Nottingham University completed in 2005 that focused on clinical leadership. He is currently working as a senior lecture at Curtin University in Western Australia.

 

Catherine StoddartAdj/Prof Catherine Stoddart

Adjunct Associate Professor Catherine Stoddart is the Chief Nurse and Midwifery Officer of Western Australia. Catherine has previously held executive management roles and senior clinical nursing positions at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Catherine has held positions in both the State and Commonwealth Governments and more recently as the Executive Director of Nursing across WA Country Health Service and the Regional Director for the Kimberley.

Catherine’s qualifications are a Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing), Master of Science, and Master of Business Administration. As a Winston Churchill fellow, Catherine has reviewed models for isolated nursing practice in Alaska and Canada, focusing on indigenous communities.

Catherine has an interest in international and indigenous health in rural and remote areas as well as leading positive and sustainable change for nursing and midwifery in Western Australia.

Kate WhiteProf Kate White

Kate’s research interests have been in the supportive care psychosocial areas related to cancer and palliative care. This has been in the areas of supportive care, advanced practice roles and models of care delivery, lymphoedema, and, sexuality and body image. She has also undertaken research in the area rural health and the quality of life of cancer patients and their families.  Professor White was appointed NSW Chair of Cancer Nursing in mid 2009.
