Cancer Care outside the Cancer Setting

The Cancer Nurses Society of Australia recognises that increasingly nurses in all sectors are caring for people affected by cancer.  As such nurses working in areas such as GP clinics and surgeries, the community sector, outpatient clinics as well as those in surgical and general medical wards are invited to attend a half day workshop that will provide an introduction to Cancer Care for the non specialist nurse. The workshop will include information on cancer diagnosis, treatment options - including chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as well as information on supportive care for cancer patients and their families.

Sexuality and Survivorship

The aim of this workshop is to provide practical evidence based guidance for cancer nurses considering implementing survivorship programs for cancer patients.  The program will provide an overview of models for survivorship care and review the current evidence for interventions to optimise recovery from cancer.  Nurse led models of care will be explored, including content, referral pathways and care plans.  In the practical sessions two areas will be focused: exercise and sexuality and sexual function.

The workshop session will encourage and support participants to explore the characteristics of clinical / patient focused leadership and look at what it means to be a Congruent leader. It will also consider how leadership is applied within a clinical context.

Dynamic communication is the cornerstone of quality patient-caregiver relationship in cancer care. Enabling supportive communication provides people affected by cancer a safe avenue to explore information about illness, treatment and prognosis.  Positive communication is also known to enhance patient disclosure, decrease patient anxiety and increase satisfaction with care. 

This workshop will focus on key communication skills and strategies that participants can practice and apply in all settings to further develop effective communications with people affected by cancer as well as the interdisciplinary team.
